Bed Bug Awareness Week Is June 4-10, 2023

Bed Bug Awareness Week is celebrated the first week in June each year. This year it falls on June 4th through June 10th. Bed bugs contribute to one of the most common pest problems in the world. They are especially bad right here in Tampa Bay, Florida. In fact, according to online search data, over six million conversations surrounded the topic of bed bugs in April of 2020 alone.

For those that are not aware, bed bugs are a very real thing. They are small brown insects that feed on the blood of animals and other insects. And, bed bug bites really hurt. Furthermore, bed bugs are not only difficult to spot, they are even more difficult to eliminate. Hence, Bed Bug Awareness Week was created as a way to eradicate the United States of these incredibly annoying pests.

The History Of Bed Bug Awareness Week

Bed Bug Awareness Week was developed by the National Pest Management Association back in 2017. The purpose was to bring awareness to the bed bug problem that has increasingly plagued the United States. The cause is designed to let the public know what bed bugs are and how they can be exterminated from the household. The Professional Pest Management Alliance ultimately took over and heavily promotes the event every year.

What Causes Bed Bugs?

Bed bugs are well known hitchhiker insects. They get into a home from another place that is infested with them. If you like in an apartment or condominium, they can actually travel from one unit to another, ultimately infesting an entire building. They typically will hitch a ride inside upholstered furniture or inside luggage while traveling. They are very small and excellent at staying concealed during the day. So, it is easy to be unaware that you actually have an infestation.

How Does Bed Bug Awareness Week Make You Aware Of A Bed Bug Problem?

In the beginning, bed bugs will leave clustered bites on one's arms, shoulders or back. Like mosquitoes, bed bug bites can be itchy. However, many people don't feel the bites. Other signs to look for may include:

  • A musty smell in and around your bed

  • Bed bug feces, which look like black dots the size of a period

  • Blood spots on your sheets and mattress

  • Bed bug skins, which look a lot like the insects themselves

  • White oval eggs the size of an apple seed
